Located in the heart of the city’s downtown (Baixa Pombalina), reconstructed by the Marquis of Pombal after the earthquake of 1755, the restaurant "Terreiro do Paço" occupies part of the Royal Palace of Ribeira, where the Portuguese Royal family used to live. The square, one of the most impressive in the world, was always Portugal’s political and economic center. It was here that for centuries the caravels arrived, bringing riches beyond belief from the former Portuguese colonies; the square was the stage for the punishments imposed by the Inquisition; it was here that was announced the re-conquest of Portugal’s independence in 1640, and that the Monarchy started to end, with the assassination of King Carlos and his son Prince Luís Filipe, in 1908. The glorious traditions of the Terreiro do Paço square are still vibrantly alive in the restaurant that proudly carries its name.
